The year
was 1995 when Wigan Athletic sports was in sever economic problems, at the time
Dave Whilan, legendary British player took the reins of the team. One of his
decisions was to sign Roberto Martinez, Jesus Seba and Isidro Diaz. Three
“young guys” who emigrated to the English football looking for a chance. They
went to Wigan, a town and a club that welcomed them with open arms. In Wigan
they made history and people affectionately known them by the name of “Three
amigos” (Three friends).
Jesus
Seba and Roberto Martínez have the honor of being the first player in history
who played in one of the most legenday competitions in world football, the
FA Cup. Also, Martínez can say that he is the first Spanish man to score a goal
in this competition, on November 11, 1995, in a game against FC Roncorn. Wigan
Athletic fans call him as “Bob" Martínez and they say that he is one of the
best players in club history.

After his
career as a professional player was the turn of the bench and he took over the
Swansea City team. With this team he got the promotion in the 2008 season. The
successes came to Roberto Martinez’s life and these are mainly due to his great
humility and his work in all the English leagues, Football League One,
Premiership or Premier League. After his work at Swansea, a great chance came
to Roberto Martinez. Wigan called him to manage the team, and he couldn’t say
no because Wigan is the club of his life.
Martínez
has managed to save the team in the past three seasons and has done
brilliantly, beating big clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Last season many people linked him with the Aston Villa bench, team with higher
aspirations than Wigan, but “Bob” wanted to stay another year and finish the
contract with a club that has given him everything.
This
season, his team has spent most of the season in the relegation zone, but a
spectacular finish and victories in complicated fields have led to Wigan to
salvation. Through his work, Roberto has become one of the most coveted coaches
in the Premier League. In recent weeks he has been linked with Liverpool, team
which he is in negotiations. It would be a tremendous pride for Spanish
football see “Bob” Martínez sitting on the bench at Anfield, one of the most
historic teams in Premier League. I am really sure Liverpool fans will support
the Spanish coach and they will sing him the legenday “You’ll never walk
alone”.
